Eureka, population of 7,676 from the 2000 census, is located between St Louis and Pacific in St Louis County along Interstate 44.
Eureka was laid out as a village in 1858 along the route of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. It is said that as the builders of the railroad track came around the bend on the east side of the present site of Eureka and looked westward at the level land with no rocks and very little dirt to move they cried out, "Eureka!" Greek meaning "I've found it!". This is how Eureka received its name. By 1890, the prosperous village of Eureka consisted of about 100 homes bounded by fruit and agricultural land. On April 7, 1954, Eureka was incorporated.
Eureka is known for its antique shopping. The 'candlelight walk' is held in 'old town Eureka' the weekend after Thanksgiving every year. Visitors use this time to tour the numerous Antique shops within walking distance of one another. Just outside of Eureka, the former site of Times Beach, which is know known as Route 66 State Park, a place for everyone to walk, ride their bike and enjoy nature. Since 1970, Eureka has been well known in the area as the home of the amusement park known as Six Flags St. Louis. It serves as a major tourist attraction in the Midwest and has an average of two to three million people visit annually. There are 2,487 households, half of which have children under the age of 18 living in them; 71.6% are married couples living together. The average household size is 2.98 and the average family size is 3.30. The median income for a household in the city is $74,301, and the median income for a family is $80,625.
